After graduating with a degree in electrical engineering from Long Island University Polytechnic Institute in 1976, Joe formed his first band with drummer Marco Minnemi and bassist John Petrucci. The group released two albums before splitting up in 1980. That same year, Joe met Steve Vai, who persuaded him to switch to lead guitar and join his new band Battle Scars (later known as Warlock). They released two albums before disbanding again in 1982 due to musical differences between Joe and Steve. In 1984 Joe formed the session band with singer Sheryl Crow, which released one album. After Sheryl left the band in 1985, Joe formed the supergroup Project V with former Whitesnake and Dio members Bernie Worrell and Vinny Appice. In 1988, Joe released his first solo album, equilibrium. The album was certified triple platinum in the USA and won him a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. His subsequent albums include 1992’s Unfinished Business, 1996’s Elements of Style and 1998’s Joe Satriani: What Lies Ahead. He has also composed music for several feature films including Speed (1994),azed (2002) and Chicken Little 2: Lose Your Head (2010).
