Conclusion
I bought this after seeing a version of the classic Boss VB-2 on Premier Guitar’s Rig Rundown feature of Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes, Middle Brother, The New Basement Tapes). He uses it as an “always on” option to give some character to his rhythm tones , since he’s often the only guitarist. When I’m playing with this pedal, I love the ability to switch between a classic sound, and a more modern, darker sound, which to my ears, is really lush and palatable. I think Boss has created a really tasty tool for players who want to add a little extra something to their soundscapes. It sounds great clean or distorted, and used in conjunction with chorus, I think its absolutely unbeatable. If you’re on the fence, definitely make sure to stick this on your board!
It’s not optic/bias/harmonic tremolo(which I also love), it’s a true pitch shifting vibrato! Beautiful dark analogue sound that can go from subtle movement to out of tune warble. I tend to use it more on the subtle side. I’m very happy with the sound and build quality. I was a little worried about adding a buffer to my pedal board but this Boss Waza buffer is quiet and doesn’t color my tone in bypass mode(this pedal does not have a true-bypass mode.
The buffer is always on, but you can control whether the signal is passing through the Bucket Brigade Device or not. Having it pass through the BBD theoretically adds a very slight darkening to your tone but allows the effect to ramp up smoothly when engaging the pedal. I don’t notice any darkening of the tone when the effect is off. If it’s there, it’s so subtle that I can’t detect it in isolation let alone in a band mix. When in “bypass” mode your signal is still being buffered but it is not passing through the buckets.) The unlatched mode is great for adding a little movement to the end of chords. I sometimes leave it on slightly which adds an almost chorus/fattening sound. Overall I’m very happy. This one is a keeper.

I’ve been through lots of chorus and vibrato pedals, and while there are other pedals that do lots more stuff, there’s just something about the VB-2 that just works. It doesn’t do the dark warped vinyl thing, it’s bright, but sits in the background really well as a little sweetener – or it gets really deep and fast! I do wish it went a tiny bit slower, though I’ve realized that too slow just gets lost, unless you’re really going for the super detuned warble thing. I also wish that the expression jack controlled the rate instead of depth, then I might be more interested in using it – it really does a passable leslie, it’d be cool to use a pedal to ramp up and down.
