The Overdrive Definition Was Defined by a Clipping Circuit

With the OD-1, BOSS introduced natural overdrive in pedal form to guitarists for the first time in 1977, revolutionizing the stompbox category. Its unique asymmetric clipping circuit emulated the appealing sound and feel of a driven tube amplifier, while controlling the volume levels. It produced a signal rich in even-order harmonics. The more versatile SD-1, which included an active tone control for shaping the treble response and minor enhancements for greater low-end body, evolved from this breakthrough design four years later.

Overdrive Perfection

Because of its natural behavior and the modest mid boost that’s part of its design, the SD-1 enables players from beginner to pro to get inspiring sounds right away. It ensures your guitar always sits perfectly in the mix with warmth, clarity, and rich presence by giving your tone a push where it matters most. Rhythm sections benefit from lower drive settings, while fat, singing leads benefit from greater drive settings. By simply manipulating your guitar’s volume control, the SD-1 is also very sensitive to input gain, allowing you to adjust various degrees of overdrive.

Every Player Needs One Pedal

The SD-1 offers the perfect sound for practically any kind of music thanks to its organic nature, reactive drive, and tone adjustments. For mild-to-moderate overdrive that’s suitable for everything from classic rock and gritty blues to pop, country, jazz, and beyond, kick on the pedal with your favorite clean or slightly driven amp. The SD-1 offers mid focus, tight bass, and smooth top end that’s ideal for heavier tones and solo playing as a booster for high-gain amplifiers and other drive pedals.

  • Mids mids mids – right where the guitar sits in a mix.
  • It seems to stack well with other drives.
  • Hugely versatile, sweet, juiced up overdrive.
  • Clean Boost- Great Clean Amp.
  • It’s surprisingly versatile
  • If you are looking for a really gritty pedal that breaks up nicely then this pedal will do you.
  • It’s really a steal at that price.
  • A little more edge than a tubescreamer in my opinion. More open sounding.
  • The older 1987 SD-1 seemed to have a bit more richness to it, the 2001 got a lot brighter which sometimes came off as shrill, though turning the tone control down a bit helps a lot.

  1. Boss SD-1 – fantastic pedal in every respect. The tone is clear and responsive. It captures simple and complex chords with clarity. I’ve used far more expensive pedals, and this one does exactly what I’m looking for in a bulletproof box with silent switching and at a ridiculously affordable price. I’ve never heard of a Boss pedal failing, and I’m not sure why I ever wandered away from them.

  2. I haven’t met a pedal I don’t like…yet! I put this SD-1 in a chain with my OD-1 and DS-1 and fiddled with them for hours. Virtually any tone you’d want is there just finding time is the issue. If I had to get rid of all but one of them…well, I’d keep the OD-1.
